Burnaby: RCMP have arrested a suspect in relation to the assault of an 89-year-old woman at Metrotown.

According to the Mounties, on April 20 Burnaby RCMP responded to a report of an assault in progress at Metrotown.

“An 89-year-old woman had been shoved to the ground by an unknown man. The victim was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and discharged later that day. Burnaby RCMP’s Investigative Support Team (IST) assumed conduct of the investigation,” said Burnaby RCMP.

According to the RCMP, through tips from the public, the police were able to obtain higher quality images of the suspect from a day prior to the assaults.

After receiving another tip from the public, Burnaby RCMP frontline officers located and arrested a 30-year-old suspect on April 24 at approximately 3:30 pm.

“In the early stages of the investigation, police learned the suspect assaulted at least two other victims on April 20. Investigators would still like to speak to these two individuals and anyone else who may have witnessed the assaults,” the RCMP said in a press release.

“We would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance. We asked for help and they stepped up. We continue to urge the additional two victims who have not yet come forward to police to contact our investigators,” said Corporal Mike Kalanj with the Burnaby RCMP.
