New Delhi: The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has sought a detailed report from the Arunachal Pradesh chief secretary on the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s (SGPC) contention that a historic site belonging to Guru Nanak Dev in Mechuka has been converted into a Buddhist temple.

Meanwhile, the Commission has written a letter to the Punjab Chief Secretary requesting him to provide a list of the number of incidents of sacrilege that have taken place in Punjab in the last 45 years.

According to a statement issued by the NCM on Monday, the Commission has taken note of the objection of Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, President of The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee( SGPC), regarding the “conversion of the historic site associated with Guru Nanak Dev at Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh into a Buddha Temple”.

“Since such incidents hurt the religious beliefs of the Sikhs and create a sense of discrimination among them, the Commission has sent a letter to the Chief Secretary, Arunachal Pradesh on April 24, 2023, seeking a detailed report on the matter pending before the Commission,” the statement said. In a statement, the NCM also appealed to the people to maintain peace and patience.

In another statement, the commission said it has come to its notice that a man barged into a gurdwara in Morinda in Punjab and attacked the granthis who were offering prayers. He also desecrated Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

However, the accused has been identified in this case and criminal action can be taken against him. In a letter to the Punjab Chief Secretary, the Commission has requested him to provide a list of the number of incidents of sacrilege that have taken place in Punjab in the last 45 years. The commission has appealed for peace and patience.
