New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate on Thursday registered a case against BBC India for violating foreign exchange rules. According to sources, after the survey of the Income Tax Department, the ED will also interrogate.
The administrator of BBC India and people from the editorial department will be questioned. The ED is probing irregularities in foreign funding in BBC India under FEMA.
According to the ED, cases have already been registered under FEMA. The investigating agency has asked the BBC to submit its ledger and financial statements.
This comes months after the Income Tax Department investigated the BBC and sent its team to BBC offices in Delhi and Mumbai over allegations of tax irregularities, diversion of profits and non-compliance. During the survey, senior BBC staff had to stay in the office overnight to answer questions.
The action came weeks after the BBC aired a documentary criticising Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership during the 2002 communal riots. A two-part BBC series titled “India: The Modi Question” was released. The government banned it in January.
