Chandigarh: Papalpreet Singh, an associate of fugitive Amritpal Singh, has been arrested by the Punjab police on Monday, officials said. He has been detained during a joint operation of Special Cell and Punjab Police.
Amid a search for fugitive separatist Amritpal Singh, Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Monday paid obeisance at the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Monday. He said that wanted persons should surrender before the law. He also said that the hard-earned peace in the state will not be allowed to be disturbed.
Talking to reporters, he said the police will nab those wanted under the law and it would be better if such people surrender before the law. Amid reports that Amritpal may have taken shelter at a religious place, DGP Yadav said religious places should not be used for personal reasons. “Religious places should not be misused,” he said.
“Any miscreants, even if they have the support of ISI, are trying to disturb peace in Punjab, their plans will not be allowed to succeed,” Yadav said.
“I want to tell our Punjabi brothers living in the US and Canada that there is complete peace in Punjab,” the DGP said. He said that everyone has legal rights and there is also a legal process.
He was apparently referring to pro-Khalistan Amritpal Singh, who has been on the run since March 18 when the police took action against him and his associates. The police chief also appealed to people not to pay heed to rumours and said, “We will maintain peace in Punjab. We will deal firmly with miscreants.”
