Chandigarh: A CBI court here has convicted the then Inspector Suba Singh Sirhind of Punjab Police and his gunman Jhirmal Singh in the case of kidnapping and killing a nearly three-decade-old Sikh youth Kuldeep Singh, a bank employee.

Suba Singh has been sentenced to three years in jail and Jhirmal Singh to five years in prison. Gurdev Singh, the then SHO named in the case, had died some time ago.

Advocates Sarbjeet Singh and Pushpinder Singh Natt, appearing for the victim’s family, said the Tarn Taran police had picked up Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Kotli Sarukha (Tarn Taran), from the house of an acquaintance on June 1, 1992 and later killed him in a fake police encounter.

The trial in the case was going on in a special CBI court in Mohali. Today the court convicted the former inspector and gunman.
