Kannur: A couple were burnt to death when their car caught fire in Kerala’s Kannur district, police said on Thursday. The accident was so horrific that no one even got a chance to save the couple’s life. The accident took place near the government district hospital in Kannur.

Eyewitnesses said the woman was pregnant and had labour pains. The woman was being taken to the hospital for a check-up but before the couple could reach the doctors, the car suddenly caught fire.

According to the information, police said that six people were in the car. Four people, including a child, were sitting in the back seat of the car. When the car caught fire, the family members sitting behind managed to get out of it. Police said that the family has been sent to the hospital.

Kannur City Police Commissioner Ajit Kumar, after visiting the spot, told the media, “They (family members) are not injured. They are in the hospital and are being examined,” he said.

The police officer said it appeared that the victims could not open the front doors and got stuck in the burning car. The accident took place when the 35-year-old man and 26 woman, living in Kuttayattur, were on their way to the district hospital for a check-up.

An eyewitness said that the woman who died was pregnant. They tried to save the couple’s life by opening the front door of the car but failed.

Whether the woman was pregnant or not, the police refused to say anything about it. “We will be able to say anything about it only after the doctors conduct an examination,” the police said.

Asked what caused the fire in the car, police said the cause would be known after an inquiry by technical experts. Police said the car will be properly inspected with the help of scientists and automobile experts.
