Phagwara: A grocery shop owner was shot dead by bike-borne assailants in Phagwara town under Kapurthala in Punjab. The bullet hit the shopkeeper in the chest. He was immediately rushed to civil hospital Phagwara by locals, from where he was referred to a private hospital in Jalandhar in a critical condition and succumbed to his injuries.

Witnesses said that there were two attackers. Shopkeeper Sanjay Sachdeva, who also works as a money exchanger, was closing his shop at time of attack.

He started engaging with Sanjay without any reason. While engaging with Sanjay, a young man pulled out a pistol and shot him. After this, both of them fled from the spot. The bullet hit Sanjay in the chest.

The neighbours immediately informed the police about the incident. Police have recovered the shell of the cartridge of the .32 bore pistol from the spot. Witnesses said the attackers fired only one shot. He then fled from the spot.
