New Delhi: The report of the National Human Rights Commission has revealed that the condition of all government mental health care hospitals in the country is very bad. National Human Rights Commission spokesperson Jamini Kumar Srivastava said that there are 46 government mental health care institutions in the country. Among them, lack of doctors, staff, medicines, cleanliness can be seen here.

The National Human Rights Commission has sent notices to the Union Health Secretary, the director of the institute, the Chief Secretary, the DGP and has given a six-week deadline.

The National Human Rights Commission reviewed the condition of mental health care centres during the last 3-4 months. The commission started by visiting the Mental Health Care Hospital in Gwalior, then also visited the hospitals in Agra and Ranchi.

During this time the situation looked very bad everywhere. Even after this, the situation of almost all the mental healthcare centers visited in the country looked the same.

According to the Mental Healthcare Act of 2017, the facilities that should be provided in mental healthcare centers were absent here. The number of doctors and staff here is very low according to patients.

There was also a huge shortage of medicines here. Cleanliness was also bad in these centers. There is nothing in these centres in the name of facilities.

In these health care centers, some people were also seen, who have been cured long ago. These people are not being rehabilitated. These people are not being taken by the family, they have a provision of half-way home in the Act. It was not even arranged.

According to the Mental Healthcare Act, the rules were to be framed and a central authority was to be formed. This was also not done. There are a total of 46 government mental health institutions in the country, all of which are in a very bad condition.

The question arises that there are healthy people, why are they living there? Is this being done to increase the number to get the grant from the government? In such a situation, the National Human Rights Commission has sought an action report.
