New Delhi: The recent cases of suicides by students aspiring to pursue a career in medical or engineering in the country’s coaching hub Kota (Rajasthan) have sparked a debate about stiff competition and unending pressure.

There are many instances across the country where young students commit suicide due to various reasons while wishing to do something in their academic career.

Suicide data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) shows that the number of students committing suicide has increased in recent years. A total of 13,089 cases of student suicides show that the number has increased by 4.5 per cent in 2021 as compared to 2020.

Half of these have been recorded in five states – Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Odisha.

Of the total suicides committed by students, 14.0 per cent were recorded in Maharashtra (1,834), according to the data. This is followed by Madhya Pradesh (1,308) at 10.0 per cent, Tamil Nadu at 9.5 per cent (1,246) and Karnataka at 6.5 per cent (855). Though the report did not mention any specific reasons behind the suicides, it said ‘failing the exam’ was one of the reasons.
