Chandigarh: An FIR was lodged against a 10-year-old boy in Punjab’s Amritsar for promoting gun culture was cancelled late evening on Friday after receiving backlash from public.
Amritsar Rural Police tweeted on Friday evening and said that the name of the child has been removed from the FIR. At the same time, a department inquiry has been initiated against the SHO of Kathunangal police station for registering case against the minor.
An FIR was registered against a 10-year-old boy at Police Station Kathunangal under Amritsar Rural Police. This FIR on the child was for promoting gun culture. The minor’s father Bhupinder Singh had posted a photo on his Facebook of his son standing with a gun and wearing a belt of bullets on his shoulders. This photo came to the notice of the cyber cell of the police.
After investigation, the police traced the 10-year-old boy, his father Bhupinder. After this, an FIR has also been registered against two other Vikramjeet and Visarat in the same case.
Bhupinder Singh has also presented his side in this case. He says that this photo was taken when his son was just 4 years old. In 2015, he posted a photo of his son with a weapon. After almost 6 and a half years, a case has now been registered against him and his son.
Amritsar Rural Police has come on the backfoot after the matter heated up. The police have tweeted on Twitter that the FIR was registered by mistake overnight. The FIR does not name the child. The police will not take any action against the child nor will he be called an accused on record.
Probe initiated against SHO
DSP Manmohan Singh has said that this case is of negligence. If a minor child makes a mistake, action is taken against the parents, not the child. The child’s name was mistakenly linked. A departmental inquiry has been initiated against the investigating officer.
Earlier, Congress state chief Amarinder Raja Warring said, “Dealing firmly against gun culture is welcome. But police should exercise restraint in dealing with children, as happened in Tarn Taran where it booked a 10 yr old.
Kids should better be counselled in such matters. I urge CM Bhagwant Mann & DGP Punjab Police to cancel the FIR.”
