Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) today warned against indulging in such sacrilege and prohibited to get tattoos with religious symbols of Sikhs or gurbani verses on their body.

The Akal Takht had issued an order in this regard in June 2013 prohibiting tattoos with Sikh religious symbols on the body.

Recently, the SGPC has again received several such complaints, one of which is against a Brazilian girl who has a tattoo of a Sikh religious symbol.

The SGPC has lodged a complaint with the embassy of India in this regard.

After receiving these complaints, the SGPC shared the order issued by the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht in this regard on social media and asked not to make such tattoos citing it was against the ‘Sikh rehat maryada’. Earlier, a case of Punjabi actress Neeru Bajwa getting a tattoo made with a verse of Gurbani has also come to light.

Similarly, actress Mandira Bedi had also made a similar tattoo, after which she publicly apologized after being opposed.

Religious sentiments hurt: Dhami

SGPC president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami said that the SGPC has asked such people who hurt Sikh sentiments not to desecrate Sikh religious symbols and they must be booked under Section 295-A of the IPC.
