Texas: A jury in the US state of Texas has sentenced a man to death for the murder of Sandeep Dhaliwal, US’s first turbaned Sikh police officer.

Dhaliwal was the first Sikh deputy of the Harris County Department. He was killed while on duty in September 2019.

Accused in this case, Robert Solis, expressed no emotion when the sentence was read on Wednesday.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a tweet, “Verdict is in: Jurors sentence Robert Solis to death. We are extremely grateful that justice has been served. Sandeep changed our Sheriff’s Office family for the better, and we continue striving to live up to his example of servant leadership. May he Rest In Peace.”

On September 27, 2019, Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal was fatally shot while conducting a traffic stop.

Harris County District Attorney Kim Aug said in a statement that the defendant shot an uniformed officer in the head in broad daylight and killed him. That is why we asked the jury members to sentence him to death.

Following the announcement of the verdict, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office paid tribute to the Sikh soldier, saying he would be remembered for his humour and ability to build personal relationships with his peers.
