London: Indian-origin Rishi Sunak will be the new Prime Minister of the UK. Sunak was getting the support of the highest number of MPs, while his rival Penny Mordaunt was far behind in support, after which she withdrew her name.

After the resignation of Liz Truss, who was the Prime Minister of Britain for 45 days, elections were held once again, in which Rishi Sunak was considered a strong contender from the beginning.

Rishi Sunak had yesterday announced his official candidature, saying his aim was to fix the economy, unite the party and “deliver for the country”.

Last month, then UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss replaced Boris Johnson as prime minister by defeating former Indian-origin finance minister Rishi Sunak in a contest for conservative party leadership. Then Truss got 57.4 percent and Sunak got 42.6 percent votes.
