Ottawa: A new research report has revealed that there are so many flaws in the Federal Cybersecurity Bill that it will allow governments around the world to justify their repressive laws.

Christopher Parsons’ report from the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab made 29 recommendations calling for transparency and accountability about the standards proposed by the Liberal government in June.

The government wants to put in place a better shield system to protect national security and provide new tools to the authorities to deal with threats related to the cyberspace sector.

Under Bill C-26, it is mandatory for sectors such as banking and telecommunication industries to improve cybersecurity and report digital attacks or pay potential penalties.

The bill seeks to enable officials to enforce standards through audit powers and penalties.

The report said that the powers required by Ottawa are filled with secrecy clauses. Therefore, they need to be improved.
