Ottawa: In yet another ‘hate crime’ incident against Indians in recent times, a park in the city of Brampton, Canada, has been vandalised.

This park is known as ‘Bhagwad Gita Park’. India has strongly condemned the incident and called it a hate crime. The Indian High Commission in Canada has appealed to the police to investigate the matter and nab the culprits soon.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown confirmed the vandalism of the park. Condemning the incident, Brown said, “We have zero tolerance against such incidents. We have learnt that the insignia of the recently unveiled Shri Bhagavad Gita Park was vandalised. I have asked the Peel Regional Police for further investigation. Our parks department is working to fix the sign board as soon as possible.”

Reacting sharply, the Indian High Commission in Ottawa said in a tweet, “We condemn the hate crime at the Shri Bhagvad Gita Park in Brampton. We urge Canadian authorities & @PeelPolice to investigate and take prompt action on the perpetrators @MEAIndia @cgivancouver @IndiainToronto.”

Meanwhile, The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said that it has taken up incidents of hate crimes, communal violence and anti-India activities with Canada and demanded action with the investigation. These crimes have not yet been brought to justice in Canada, a ministry statement said.

About 16 lakh people of Indian origin settled in Canada. There have been at least two incidents of attacks on Hindu temples in the country this year.
