New Delhi: The hopes of thousands of Indian medical students who returned from Ukraine after the Russian attack suffered a setback with the Centre apprising the Supreme Court that those students cannot be accommodated in Indian medical colleges due to lack of provisions of law.

So far, not a single foreign medical student has been allowed to be transferred or accommodated in any Indian medical institution/university by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the Central government said in an affidavit.

The government filed a counter affidavit on various petitions filed by students who have been admitted to their respective foreign medical colleges/colleges. The universities have medical students from the first to fourth year batch, who are mainly seeking transfer to Indian medical colleges in their respective semesters.

“It is humbly submitted that as far as such students are concerned, there are no such provisions under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 or the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 as well as for accommodating or transfer of medical students from any institution, as well as transfer from foreign medical institutions/colleges to Indian medical colleges,” the Centre has said.

However, it has said that in order to provide assistance to students who have not completed MBBS in Ukraine, the NMC, in consultation with the Ministry of External Affairs, has issued a public notice on September 6, indicating that the Commission will accept certificates from students completing their remaining courses in other countries with the permission of the parent institution of Ukraine.
