London: UK foreign secretary Liz Truss defeated Indian-origin former chancellor Rishi Sunak in the election for the post of Prime Minister of Britain.

The chair of the Conservative Party’s powerful 1922 Committee of backbench MPs, Sir Graham Brady, at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre near Downing Street., formally announced Truss’s victory today.

Britain’s third female PM

Liz Truss will be Britain’s third female PM after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May. Liz Truss will be sworn in as PM on Tuesday. Liz Truss got 81,326 votes and Rishi Sunak got a total of 60,399 votes.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her on the victory.

“Congratulations @trussliz for being chosen to be the next PM of the UK. Confident that under your leadership, the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will be further strengthened. Wish you the very best for your new role and responsibilities,” Modi said in a tweet.
