Chandigarh: The Bhagwant Mann government removed Punjab Director General of Police VK Bhawra and made him the chairman of The Punjab Police Housing Corporation. Gaurav Yadav, a 1992-batch IPS officer, will continue to be the officiating DGP.
At present, Gaurav Yadav holds the additional charge of Punjab DGP. With this, Punjab has become the second state after UP to remove the DGP appointed from the UPSC.
VK Bhavra’s leave ends on September 4. Now the Punjab government will send the names for the new panel to the UPSC and the formalities regarding the appointment of the new DGP will be completed in 6 months.
What happened in the last few days?
Ever since the Aam Aadmi Party government was formed in Punjab, opposition parties have been constantly raising questions about law and order. After the AAP government came to power, there was a rocket attack on the Police Intelligence Office in Mohali. Famous singer Sidhu Moosewala was murdered on May 29 this year. A day earlier, on May 28, Sidhu Moosewala’s security was pruned. Since then, questions were raised on the government and the Punjab Police.
Congress appointed Bhawra as Punjab DGP
Former CM Charanjit Singh Channi had made Iqbal Preet Singh the DGP, but this angered Congress’s Navjot Singh Sidhu. Navjot Sidhu said that the person who was made DGP did not investigate the sacrilege cases properly. Following this, Bhawra as appointed state police head with the approval of UPSC.
