Quebec: In a tragic road mishap, two people were killed and nine others were injured on Monday after a truck plowed into pedestrians who were walking beside a road in the eastern Quebec town of Amqui, police said.
The 38-year-old driver, surrendered before the Quebec Provincial Police (SQ) after the accident. He was arrested in connection with the deaths.
Eyewitnesses said the victims were spread over a distance of 100 metres. The incident took place around 3:00 p.m. on St. Benoit Boulevard, about 350 kilometers northeast of Quebec City.
An SQ spokesman said that the two victims were in their 60s and 70s. The children are among the injured being treated at different hospitals. Two of the nine injured are said to be in critical condition. The remaining seven are under investigation.
After the accident, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, “My heart is with the people of Amqui, Quebec today. As we learn more about the tragic events that have taken place, I’m keeping everyone affected in my thoughts. And to the first responders: Thank you for acting quickly, courageously, and professionally.”
