Chandigarh: At least 10 people died and 12 were injured after a bus they travelling in fell into a deep gorge on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on Monday morning.
The accident took place near Jhajjar Kotli in Jammu at 5.30 am. The bus was on its way to Katra from Amritsar when the incident took place.
Local officials said that 10 people of the same family have died in this tragic incident, while 12 others are seriously injured and they have been taken to the hospital.
According to the information received, the bus had left for Katra from Amritsar. The bus fell off a bridge in Jhajjar Kotli area. The trench depth is close to 50 feet. The cause of the incident is said to be the brake failure of the bus. The bus lost its balance and fell down from the bridge.
The bus overturned and fell into the ditch. The bodies of 10 people killed in the incident have been kept in the mortuary for identification.
Meanwhile, the treatment of the injured has started in the Medical College and Primary Health Center of Jammu.
All the deceased belong to the same family and are residents of Fatehgarh Chudiya Road in Amritsar. They had left for Vaishno Devi. After the incident, the family members of the deceased have left for Jammu, police said.
