Washington: Eric Garcetti has been elected as the new US Ambassador to India after the Senate on Wednesday voted on his nomination. The position has remained vacant for over two years.

Former mayor Garcetti’s nomination was pending when US President Joe Biden nominated him in July 2021 and later again in January this year. Eric Garcetti is considered a loyalist of Joe Biden.

In Yesterday’s voting, Eric Garcetti received a total of 52 votes in favor, while 42 votes were cast against him.

Eric Garcetti will replace 52-year-old Ambassador to India Ken Juster, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump. Ken Juster was appointed ambassador to India in May 2017. After this, she resigned after Biden became president.

According to Eric Garcetti’s website, his childhood was spent in the San Fernando Valley of America. He studied B.A. and M.A. from Columbia University. He was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University and also studied at the London School of Economics (LSE).

He has also studied at the Occidental College and the University of Southern California (USC). After this, Garcetti also worked as an officer in the United States Navy Reserve for 12 consecutive years.

Eric Garcetti was the 42nd Mayor of Los Angeles from July 2013 to December 2022. He was appointed the first Jewish mayor of Los Angeles, the country’s second-largest city. He was elected four times to serve as the President of the City Council (2006-2012).
