Canada: Speaking at the World Economic Forum, President Donald Trump said the United States does not need to import oil, gas, cars, or timber from Canada because the country is sufficiently endowed with its own resources. He also repeated his threat to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, which could possibly come in the way of a long-standing trade relationship between the two nations. Canada supplies 60% of U.S. crude oil imports and almost entirely all its imports of natural gas. A possible trade war would cost thousands of jobs in Canada, with experts warning of fallout on industries such as oil, gas, and auto production. “Strong” but not kneejerk was Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s promise of a response, with counter-tariffs possibly targeting U.S. products from certain states.
