Ottawa: A new report from Statistics Canada reveals that international students were more likely to live in unsuitable housing conditions in 2021 compared to Canadian-born students. According to the study, which utilized the latest census data, Indian students faced the highest likelihood of living in unsuitable housing among international students. In Brampton, Ontario, and Surrey, British Columbia—cities with the highest concentrations of Indian students—over 60 percent of international students resided in unsuitable housing. Suitable housing criteria include that adults should have their own bedrooms unless they are a couple. The significant increase in the number of international students in Canada has sparked concerns about the pressure on the housing market and the affordability issues faced by students. In 2023, the number of international students in Canada exceeded one million, marking a 29 percent increase from the previous year.
