Calgary: Northwest Territories Premier Caroline Cochrane was joined by Alberta premier Danielle Smith during her interaction with Northwest Territories evacuees at a reception centre in Calgary on Friday.

Close to 22,000 people from Northwest Territories have taken refuge at the centre.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Caroline Cochrane said she is angry that her wildfire-ravaged region doesn’t have the same services as the south.

She called on the federal government to ensure the territory has infrastructure like communications and roads to help keep people safe from wildfires.

Cochrane said communication technologies and insufficient road access have caused serious issues as the territory faces a serious wildfire season that’s forced tens of thousands to flee their communities.

The premier said communication services have gone down a number of times recently due to wildfires, noting the issue is not going away. — With Canadian Press
