Meta says it is removing news for all Canadian users on its Facebook and Instagram platforms over the next few weeks.

With this move, Canadian users will not able be to access news on these social media platforms.

The company says the step has been taken in response to the Liberal government’s Online News Act, which became law earlier this summer.

The bill requires tech giants to enter into agreements that compensate Canadian news outlets for content shared or otherwise repurposed on their platforms.

Meta was running a test that limited news for up to five per cent of its users in response to the federal law.

The change will mean links to news articles and other content posted by Canadian publishers and broadcasters will no longer be viewable to people accessing the social-media platforms in Canada. — Canadian Press
