Jasper: Three weeks after a wildfire forced a large evacuation of Jasper National Park, officials announced that residents can safely return home on Friday, August 16.
Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland mentioned that plans for re-entry are progressing faster than expected, aiming to ease the anxiety of those affected.
The wildfire, which led to the evacuation of 20,000 visitors and 5,000 residents, destroyed about one-third of the town’s buildings, including some neighborhoods. However, important buildings like the hospital and water treatment plant were saved. The fire now covers 33,000 hectares but is 89% contained. Recent rain and cooler weather have helped control the blaze.
Returning residents will need to be self-sufficient as services may be limited, and restoring essential services like gas, water, and electricity could take up to three weeks. Information sessions will be held to help with re-entry logistics. The return will depend on the wildfire’s activity, and crews will continue fighting the fire into the fall.
