Ottawa: The federal government is proclaiming a National Day Against Gun Violence on the first Friday of June every year.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino and representatives of the Toronto Raptors basketball team will discuss the plan at an event in Toronto today.

The government says that the purpose of this National Day is to create awareness and create awareness at the national level about the causes and effects of gun violence.

The issue comes at a time when the Senate is evaluating the government’s bill to ban handguns, arms smuggling, ghost guns and assault-style weapons.

The bill was strongly opposed by the Conservatives in the House of Commons, saying it would also hurt the owners of law-abiding weapons.
