Abbotsford: Brianna MacDonald, a 13-year-old from Abbotsford, B.C., died from a suspected overdose last month. Her family, devastated by her loss, is calling for changes in the system they believe failed her. Despite their efforts to get her help, Brianna’s addiction and mental health issues were not adequately addressed.

Her mother, Sarah MacDonald, and step-father, Lance Charles, criticized Fraser Health for providing drug paraphernalia but not adequate treatment. They also felt the system failed them by not allowing them to mandate involuntary treatment for their daughter, despite her severe condition. Brianna had previously been hospitalized but was discharged against her family’s wishes.

Brianna was eventually living in a homeless camp where she died. Her family is urging for more support for involuntary treatment and better protection for vulnerable children. Fraser Health stated they are reviewing Brianna’s care and are committed to learning from the tragedy.
