Ottawa: The strike involving Canada Post, already closing in on four weeks, remains with no end in sight amidst the continued distance between its negotiators and those of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW). The union has been proposing wage increases totaling 19% over four years, job security and enhancements to benefits, among others. Canada Post, however, insisted the union’s demands have gone up and pressed for changes to pensions and salaries. A crucial point of dispute is also the expansion of weekend deliveries; the union argued Canada Post has relied too heavily on part-time workers. Despite growing calls for government intervention, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the government is pushing the two sides to find a settlement. The strike, which began on Nov. 14, has yet to include a federal mediator after attempts stalled over the deep divide between parties.
