Ottawa: Liberal leadership candidate Chrystia Freeland indicates that Canada should cautiously impose tariffs worth $200 billion as a countermeasure to the 25% tariffs that are being considered by U.S. President Donald Trump on Canadian imports. She advises the government to publish its proposals to consult on a detailed retaliation plan, targeting select items such as Florida oranges, Wisconsin milk, and Michigan dishwashers. She also recommended a “buy Canadian” strategy prohibiting U.S. access to Canadian government procurement unless for defense. Candidate Mark Carney also insists on further examining cutting Quebec power exports to the U.S. before he is ready to agree on the countervailing tariffs.
