Ottawa: The Ottawa Police Service Sexual Assault and Child Abuse (SACA) Section has charged former Canadian senator Don Meredith with three counts of sexual assault and one count of criminal harassment.
Meredith, 58 years old, has been charged with three counts today and released on a promise to appear in court.
The police said that charges were related to alleged incidents in 2013 and 2014 reported to police by an adult woman.
Meredith was a Pentecostal minister, appointed to the Senate by former prime minister Stephen Harper.
He had served from December 2010 to 2017 and submitted his resignation in May 2017 after the Senate’s ethics committee recommended Meredith must be expelled from the Red Chamber following his relationship with a teenage girl.
The Ottawa police suspect that there may be more alleged victims and asked people to come forward if they have any information related to the case against him.
