Gurpal Mann was born in Sangrur, Punjab and attended secondary school in Jalandher. After finishing grade twelve, Gurpal joined the Merchant Navy. He came to Canada in 1970 and originally settled in Vancouver working as a security guard. In 1979, he opened Mann Music and Video.
While managing his store, Gurpal also started hosting his first music show called Sangeet Sagar at a small station in Langley in 1977. He continued working in a similar capacity when he moved to CJVB Vancouver. Since 2005, Gurpal has been hosting a popular music show called Geetan Bari Pitari at Sher-E-Punjab Radio.
Gurpal is a keen photographer, and he was able to turn his passion into a profession when he opened his store. He enjoys watching movies and listening to Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu music. He is a fan of Indian music from the fifties and sixties and says that his favourite singer is Mohammad Rafi and his favourite musician is OP Nayyer.
