Gurmit Athwal is a veteran broadcast anchor with more than 30 years of experience. She began her career in the media industry in the late eighties co-hosting various television and radio shows. She has been a part of the Sher-E-Punjab radio team since 2001, when the station was launched. Gurmit now hosts a popular weekend show called Sabrang, which focuses on Punjabi culture and tradition.
As a child, Gurmit always had a passion for the arts. While going to school in London, England she did her first acting performance to Kala Doriya Kunde Naal Areyaa Ee Oye at a Christmas party. After that performance, she realized that she needed to pursue this passion as part of her career. Since then, Gurmit has made appearances in several Punjabi films including Dhuk Pardesan De, Ik Chup Sau Sukh and Neal’n’Nicky.
In her spare time, Gurmit enjoys shopping for the latest trends in clothing and jewellery. Gurmit also likes to give back to her community, especially by helping seniors as she has always felt they are the best sources for knowledge. Gurmit describes herself as a very honest person, someone who will “tell you like it is.” Gurmit has an Electronics Technician diploma from Scarborough College and a Business Management diploma from Kwantlen University College. She is married and has two children.
